The New York Knicks are a professional basketball team in the NBA that is based in New York, USA. They were originally part of the BAA league and later became part of the NBA. The Knicks are the only team to remain in the same city since their inception. The team was successful in the early years, consistently making the playoffs under the leadership of their first coach, Joe Lapchick. However, the team went into a decline when Lapchick resigned in 1956, and they struggled for a few years.
It wasn't until Red Holzman became the head coach in the 1960s that the Knicks began to regain their power. They won two NBA Championships in 1970 and 1973 and were successful throughout the 1980s, making it to the playoffs six times but never reaching the NBA Finals. In the 1990s, the Knicks became known as a legendary playoff team led by center Patrick Ewing. They made it to the NBA Finals twice in 1994 and 1999 but were unable to win.
Since 2000, the Knicks have been trying to reclaim their past success. They won the title in 2012-13 under the leadership of coaches Carmelo Anthony and Amar'e Stoudemire. According to a 2017 report, the Knicks are the most valuable franchise in the NBA, with an estimated value of $3.3 billion.
